Better Life Initiative for the Aged (BLIFA) is a Nigerian based Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) dedicated to providing humanitarian services to poor aged people who have nobody to care for them and is no longer able to earn a leaving on their own. BLIFA was registered as a corporate organization in 2008 with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration No. 27333. It is also registered with the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Women Affairs.
We started in 2005 in South-Eastern Nigeria with very few individual who share’s strong passion for the welfare of the poor aged and have the feelings of working together for a common cause. Blifa is funded by voluntary contributions from individuals and domestics organizations but gradually getting the attention of international donors.
Blifa provides social and economic empowerment programmes for the old and aged. We also partner with insurance and healthcare providers to organize Seminars, coaching programmes on ‘PREPARING FOR AN EXCITING OLD AGE’ for corporate organizations, clubs, individuals and cooperative societies.
We work with the community leaders, appointed coordinators, and our field representatives to identify core beneficiaries. The primary factors considered are as follows:
- 65 years old (men and women) and above who have lived their lives in abject poverty.
- Poor elderly that is associated with problems of poor diet, ill health, and no shelter.
- Older people who are isolated, living on the margins of the communities and deeply vulnerable.
- The poor elderly who do not have access to any form of support or economic empowerment from the Local Authorities.
